Food Stamp (CalFresh)

food stamp logoThe CalFresh Program, federally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), can add to your food budget to put healthy and nutritious food on the table. The program issues monthly electronic benefits that can be used to buy most foods at many markets and food stores. The CalFresh Program helps to improve the health and well-being of qualified households and individuals by providing them a means to meet their nutritional needs.

Eligibility and Issuance Requirements

  • citizens and most lawfully-present immigrants
  • The maximum gross allowed is 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)

CalFresh benefits can be used to purchase:

  • Foods for human consumption.
  • Seeds and plants to grow food for household use.

CalFresh benefits cannot be used to purchase:

  • Any non-food item such as pet food, soaps, paper products, household supplies, grooming items and cosmetics.
  • Alcoholic beverages or tobacco products.
  • Vitamins and medicines.
  • Any food that will be eaten in the store. *
  • Any food marketed to be heated in the store. *
